About the founder
Hello, thank you for visiting Wild Orange and Bloem!
My name is Rachel Helzer, I go by Helzer these days. Rachel was a popular name growing up so all us Rachels went by our last names to avoid confusion. Sobriquet Helzer has stuck since. I grew up in Long Beach California and earned my cosmetologist license in 2006. I began my career working with Wella, Sabastian, Toni & Guy, and Nick Arrojjo. I moved to the bay area to work with Aveda in 2009. Over the next few years I worked with Bumble & Bumble, Kerastase, Label M. and Orbe to name a few. Moving to the bay area granted me access to a whole new world of hair, most importantly queer hair. When I found myself renting a chair at Glama Rama Salon in San Francisco in 2011. This place was an alternative hair sanctuary. The community and education I received during my time with there was pivotal. Sparking inspiration in me that would one day become Wild Orange and Bloem.
In 2016, after a decade of working with the big name brands and their chemicals, salon life had taken its toll on my health. Instead of throwing in the towel in favor of a hairspray free job, I decided to challenge convenience and get informed. For my own health and for the wellbeing of those around me I wanted to create a cleaner and greener salon environment. One that involved plants, and looked at our hair and beauty products in a holistic way. I got my certification in Western Herbalism from the California School of Herbal Studies that year. I began incorporating my natural beauty knowledge into my hair practice.
Today I practiced hair craft, combining natural beauty remedies, products and herbs with modern hair science. While there are still a few "chemical" ingredients involved in my practice, (certain chemicals are often necessary to achieve special effects coloring & texturizing services) however all products have been vetted, researched and carefully chosen to provide maximum results with the smallest amount of impact. You will notice the difference the moment you walk through the salon door.
“In a world offering instant gratification and quick convenience, where a single online shopping cart lets you buy almost anything with one click, seeking us out makes you an outlier.” - Cult+King.
